We all know about Url (Uniform Resource Locator) . For those who don’t know it’s the address of website like http://www.affiliaterevenue-info.com . Url is the most important part of your website as its help to differentiate between pages of your website than other millions of website on internet .
In this Post I am going to discuss that how you can design the internal url structure of your website to make your SEO strategy more effective .But before that if you are planning to buy a domain name then please read this article here which tells you that how a keyword in your domain name can help you in improving your rankings in Search Engines . For example if you are targeting a keyword “cheap tickets” and you get a domain name with these keywords than you won first phase of ranking war even without starting a website.
But whether these domain names are still available. The answer is No. In almost all the niches good domain names are not available or if available they are sold at very high prices. So here comes the role of your Internal URL Structure. Make your internal url structure SEO friendly . Here are some tips which you can follow while designing your internal url structure.
1 . Prefer Static urls over Dynamic urls :- Search engine loves static url as they are easy to crawl and indexed by search engine spiders as compared to dynamic urls .Most of the times Search Engine (Except Google) don’t index dynamic urls. Try avoid the use of symbols like ? and & in your urls as its very confusing both for search engines and human users.
Example of static url are:-
websitename.com
websitename.com/product-id
Examples of Dynamic url are :-
Websitename.com/index.php?act=edit&id=764587
2 . Use Keywords in your URL :- You can use targeted keywords in your url .
For eg:- if you are selling “abc shoes” .Then you should make your url as :-
Websitename.com/abc-shoes
The advantage of this is that search engines and human readers would easily know that the page at this url is about “abc shoes “. But don’t overstuff your url by repeating same keywords . As search engines can consider it as keyword stuffing or SPAM. The another advantage of this that you don’t need to take care of anchor text if any other website is linking to you. For eg:-
A link like “websitename.com/abc-shoes” with anchor text “xyz” would still pass you link juice for keyword “abc-shoes”. So you don’t to spam blogs or other sources of links with keywords as your name
3. Try to keep urls short So that they are easy to remember. You can use two versions of url one which if easy to remember and then do a redirect to a url with keywords.
4. Use hyphens and avoid underscores. Don’t go for more than 3 deep levels in you directory structure.
The carefully planned and designed Internal URL Structure can really help in improving you rankings

@robert thanks you liked the post .there is reason behind that if you search word1_word2 google will only return exact results but if you search for word1-word2 that page can be returned for the searches word1, word2, and even “word1 word2″.
That would clear your doubt .

Interesting post. What do you recommend if you are allready ranking well using dynamic URL’s? we though about changing them and using 301 redirects but dont want to risk any loss in ranking. Opinions?
URL structure is a huge bonus often times. Don’t forget to use the display URL to target keywords if you use any pay per click services. This can always help as it can provide additional context for a searcher.
We have found that in developing new sites using automated CMS’s some are better than others. It’s worth checking on which CMS’s allow friendly URL structures so you dont have to go through and change everything later down the track.

Very good post. I try to use my keyword phrase every time I create a new web page. This helps me rank better in the search engines than a lot of competing pages.
It’s also good to use something other than ‘Home’ to link to your home page. For example, I use ‘Directory Home’ to link to my home page for search engine reasons. Obviously, you have to be sensible from a site visitor perspective.

Optimum number per file name or folder name or domain name is 3 words, maximum 4 words. The most important keyword is best to put at the first place of file name. They are visible in SERP-s as bold ones.
